Tailgating isn’t just a party, research shows

Pregame tailgating isn’t just a party. It’s a complex community-building exercise that hearkens back to ancient harvest festivals.

John Sherry, a University of Notre Dame cultural anthropologist, conducted a two-year study of college tailgating and found that the parking lot parties have ties to harvest celebrations in ancient Rome and Greece, picnics during Civil War battles and modern gatherings such as camp-outs at Jimmy Buffett concerts and Occupy Wall Street encampments. On Sept 26th the ILoveToTailgate family lost a dear friend to Breast Cancer.  Her positive attitude, courage, and fighting spirit inspired many, and her infectious laughter will be missed at the tailgate!

Tailgating estimated to hit $20 billion in spending

The Tailgating Industry Association (TIA) welcomes football weekends and the $20 billion estimated to be spent at sports and non-sports events this season.

With prime tailgating season off and running with the commencement of college football games this past weekend, the Tailgating Industry Association, which represents the goals and interests of manufacturers of tailgating products, estimates the annual take for the industry at around $20 billion. Big 12 Preview: Ranking the Fanbases

To the world of college football nothing is more sacred than rankings. We love to have coaches rank teams, media to rank players and teams, and even get computers in on the action. But what about the fans? I say it’s time to rank the fans of the Big 12! As a reminder, we take in to consideration the size of fanbase, student sections, tailgating, stadium atmosphere, traditions surrounding the games, and travel of the fanbase. As someone that grew up in the mecca of tailgating – Green Bay, WI – I admit I have higher standards when it comes to the pre-game activities, but I will tell you this much, there’s more than tailgating to a fanbase too.
