Bocce
Overview
Bocce looks like it wants a long court. On the lot it doesn’t. Shorten the lane, soft balls only, and keep every throw inside your stall or the strip in front of the truck.
Why it’s a good choice
Quieter than bags, still a real skill game. Mixed ages play well — soft outdoor sets are forgiving. Good when neighbors are close and you want rivalry without the clang. Teams of two or open rotation both work.
Where best to play
Call a court 20–30 feet long for a stall game (regulation is longer — nobody cares on game day). Mark a foul line. One lane. No aiming through someone else’s canopy. Soft balls still roll into coolers — bank a soft wall if the court is short. Tight-spot family.
Rules
- Coin-flip for first pallino. Toss the pallino down the court.
- Each side rolls 4 balls toward it (partners at opposite ends if you want).
- Closest ball to the pallino scores. Same side can stack points if they own the next closest — agree “one point” vs “all closer balls” before round one.
- Play to 12 or 15. Short slate wins more games before kickoff.
Gear / setup notes
- 8 bocce balls (4 per side — resin or soft outdoor sets travel better than stone)
- 1 pallino · measuring tape or marked rope for the foul line
- Skip metal / rock-hard balls on asphalt next to cars
- Don’t play across a driving lane. Ever.
Pallino down. Soft rolls. Keep it in your footprint.
