Tailgating 101: Planning the Lot
Good lots aren’t accidents. Walk the plan once the night before — then game day morning feels like hospitality, not scramble.
Start with your style
Ask it out loud: small calm crew, or a big table with music and a wave for whoever walks by?
Set up near people who throw the same kind of party. Quiet next to quiet. Loud next to loud. Respect is hospitality — nobody enjoys a mismatch.
Location is half the game
- End of a row usually means room to breathe — chairs, games, a path that doesn’t fight foot traffic.
- Grass edge (when allowed) is a jackpot for kids, chairs, and cooler overflow.
- Bathrooms nearby make or break longer lots. Scout them on the way in.
Know the rules
Confirm open times, flame, alcohol, and tent size for your stadium — written ≠ always how it’s called that Saturday.
Browse lot Guides → — school pages when we have them; week-of athletics advisory still beats a guess from us.
Pregame rituals
Team walk / Arch / Hawk Walk energy is school-specific — don’t guess clocks. When your school has a Guide, use it. When it doesn’t, check athletics the week of.
Weather, logistics, traffic
Weather. Will the asphalt puddle? Wind-blasted or sun-baked? Early season loves shade and breeze; late season loves sun and a wind break. Pack for the forecast and the surprise. Pack sides + fan or layers before the forecast lies.
Logistics. Don’t plan a 20×20 canopy and fifty chairs if you’re four blocks out with two sets of hands. Size the setup to the carry. Know which roads shut for pedestrians — backup route, arrive before the choke.
Traffic. Families and games want quieter rows. Open-door crews might want the busy aisle. Close-in parking means a slow exit — plan the goodbye as carefully as the hello.
Watching the game on the lot (optional)
If you’re bringing a TV or projector, plan the view like you plan the canopy.
- Face the screen away from harsh sun when you can; tall buildings and trees block antennas and wash out the picture.
- Prefer a streaming stick + charged battery / power station over old dish-only setups — unless your lot still needs a dish, then scout a clear southern sky line before you commit.
- Tape or weight every cable so foot traffic doesn’t yank the setup.
- Generators and fuel only where your lot rules allow — confirm before you roll.

Prepare for the unexpected
Mother Nature doesn’t RSVP. Neither do half the guests.
Pocket ponchos or light rain shells, an extra blanket, sunscreen, small first-aid, antacid for the heroic chip run. Bungees and a tarp save tables from wind and sun. Extra drinks, snacks, and ice almost never go to waste — that’s how you welcome the friend-of-a-friend without scrambling.
Dress like you mean to stay
Team colors welcome. Comfort mandatory.
- Early heat: breathable layers, sunscreen, hat or sunglasses, shoes you can walk in.
- Fall / winter: layers you can peel or add. Hands and feet go first — gloves, warm hat, heavy socks, boots. Disposable hand warmers are cheap insurance.
- A spare shirt in the car fixes spills and sudden rain without ending the day.
Leave it cleaner
Pack trash bags — and use them. Recycle where the lot offers it. Dump ashes only where allowed. Leaving the asphalt cleaner than you found it is how crews get remembered kindly next week. Full arrive-and-tear-down rhythm lives in Setup →.
Next: roles & checklist
Assign roles and run the list once before you roll — don’t bury a full checklist inside Planning.
