Catch
Overview
Catch is the oldest open-grass game on the lot. One ball. Two (or a few) people who aren’t throwing across the cook line. Face away from canopies and the road.
Why it’s a good choice
Zero setup. Zero scoreboard required. Perfect warm-up when the grill is heating and you want bodies moving without claiming a full court. Scales from two people to a loose triangle. Soft or youth football travels nicer in a crowded lot than a rock-hard game ball.
Where best to play
Pick a lane or grass patch that isn’t somebody’s parking space or the walk to the gate. Throw parallel to your setup, not through it. If you can’t miss without hitting a tent, cooler, or car — switch to a tight-spot game. Open-grass family.
Rules
- Warm-up distance first. Stretch the lane only when both people can catch without diving into traffic.
- One ball out at a time. Spare stays in the bag.
- Rotate a third person: triangle catch, still one ball.
- No “hail mary” contests toward the road. Ever.
- Soft training baseballs only near cars and kids — a hardball on asphalt next to windshields is a no.
Gear / setup notes
Football (soft/youth preferred) or soft baseball / foam for little kids. Towel for wet balls. More open-lane options: open-grass throw · track / scoop ball.
Face the empty grass. Not the grill.
