Giant Yard Dice
Overview
Giant yard dice are table dice that grew up. Same pips. Bigger roll. One set runs Yardzee, Farkle, ship-captain-crew, or whatever house game the crew already knows — call it before the first roll.
Why it’s a good choice
Spectacle without a projectile. Mixed ages and skill levels share one mat. Multiple games from one foam set — better haul value than a single-purpose lawn toy. Soft foam only near cars and kids.
Where best to play
Usually open grass. A wide stall with a mat can work if rolls stay short. Dice stay on the mat — a runaway foam die into the grill line ends the game. Weigh mat corners in wind.
Rules
Agree the game before anyone rolls.
Yardzee (Yahtzee on the lot)
Same categories as Yahtzee. Each player gets 13 turns, up to 3 rolls per turn. Highest score wins.
Farkle
Six foam dice. Bank at least one scoring die, then stop or risk another roll. Bust = no score that turn. Hot dice → roll again. First to 10,000 (or short 5,000). Scoring: 1s = 100, 5s = 50, three of a kind = face × 100 (three 1s = 1,000). Pocket rules: table dice.
Ship, Captain, Crew
Need 6 then 5 then 4; leftover dice are cargo. Three rolls max.
High roll / low roll
One roll each. Instant — good when the grill just beeped.
Gear / setup notes
- 5–6 giant foam dice (Farkle wants six) · tarp/blanket/mat · scorecard or phone
- Not wood that dents cars. Table size lives on dice.
Big dice. Small rules. Keep them on the tarp.
